What is the menopause?

The menopause is defined as the point in a woman’s life when her periods stop for good. It usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55. At this time, there are very few eggs left in the ovaries, levels of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone decrease which, in turn, leads to the gradual disappearance of periods.

For many women the absence of periods and not having to worry about falling pregnant are welcome changes at this point in their lives. However, most women will also experience menopausal symptoms as a result of falling hormone levels.
